South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands sovereignty dispute : ウィキペディア英語版 | South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands sovereignty dispute
The sovereignty of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is disputed between the United Kingdom and Argentina. The United Kingdom claimed South Georgia in 1775,〔George Forster. ''A Voyage Round the World in His Britannic Majesty's Sloop Resolution Commanded by Capt. James Cook, during the Years 1772, 3, 4 and 5 (2 vols.)''. London, 1777.〕〔R.K. Headland, (''The Island of South Georgia'' ), Cambridge University Press, 1984. ISBN 0-521-25274-1〕 annexed the islands in 1908, and has exercised ''de facto'' control with the exception of a brief period during the Falklands War in 1982 when the islands were partially controlled by Argentina.〔(Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Country Profile: South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands (British Overseas Territory) – History )〕 The dispute started in 1927 when Argentina claimed sovereignty over South Georgia, and subsequently was expanded in scope with Argentina claiming the South Sandwich Islands in 1938.〔(World Statesmen.org: South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands ); Accessed 23 June 2008〕 The islands have no indigenous population,〔(Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands )〕 and currently no permanent population. == History of the claims ==
